The Ann Arbor Hub team attended an insightful Sprouts and Microgreens Workshop at the Ann Arbor District Library. We left with so much knowledge about not only the process of growing sprouts and microgreens at home but also the health benefits of eating them and we even walked away with a starter kit to get growing the same day!
Our kit included:
Seeds for both sprouts and microgreens
A jar for sprouting
A container with grow medium for microgreens
The workshop taught us how simple it is to grow nutrient-packed greens right on your kitchen counter or windowsill, making it easy to incorporate fresh, homegrown foods into your daily meals.
Why Grow Sprouts & Microgreens?
Sprouts and microgreens are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They can boost your immune system, improve digestion, and even help lower inflammation. Plus, they add flavor and texture to everything from sandwiches avocado toast and even smoothies.
How to Grow Your Own
Sprouts: Soak seeds overnight, drain, and rinse twice daily. In 3-5 days, your sprouts will be ready to enjoy!
Microgreens: Spread seeds on damp soil, mist daily, and let them grow in sunlight. In 10-14 days, snip and enjoy.
What to Grow
Popular microgreens and sprouts include:
Broccoli
Radish
Arugula
Sunflower
Kale
Pea Shoots
Health Benefits & Recipes
Not only are sprouts and microgreens healthy — they're also delicious! Here are some tasty ways to enjoy them:
Avocado Toast with Broccoli Microgreens: Top whole-grain toast with smashed avocado, fresh tomatoes, a balsamic glaze, and broccoli microgreens for a refreshing bite.
Spicy Avocado Toast: Add a kick with wasabi vinaigrette, arugula, or radish microgreens.
Microgreen Salad: Mix several varieties of microgreens for layers of flavor. Add grated ginger, sliced purple cabbage, onion slices, radish, lemon zest, olive oil, sea salt, and black pepper.
Smoothies: Freeze leftover microgreens and blend with fresh fruit, yogurt, chia seeds, honey, and your choice of milk or water for a nutrient-packed drink.
We're excited to start growing our own greens and sharing the journey with our Ann Arbor community! Whether you're looking to boost your health, save money on fresh produce, or try something new, growing sprouts and microgreens is a simple, rewarding way to take control of what’s on your plate. If you're a hands on learner we suggest you check the events page at aadl.org for the next workshop.
